Pega app helps clients keep employees safe while managing staffing availability during crisis

The COVID-19 pandemic has impacted organizations across every industry, forcing them to quickly modify workforce plans and adapt to new, unpredictable challenges and needs. Despite these rapidly changing plans during this time of crisis, healthcare organizations on the frontlines, in particular, still have a number of critical and essential requirements – including the health, safety, and availability of their workforce.

The quick spread of the virus has resulted in a high volume of patients with severe respiratory illnesses in need of hospitalization, stressing hospital and healthcare worker resources. And in an environment where medical and support staff at every level risk exposure to COVID-19, understanding the location, wellbeing, and readiness of care providers is absolutely essential.

To help healthcare and other organizations track risks as well as data, such as quarantines, staffing levels, schedules, and availability, Pega created a workforce safety and tracking application. Deployed within an existing Pega Platform™ environment, the application is designed to support Pega client organizations with tools to visualize and actively manage workforce and safety challenges during times of crisis to maintain continuity. It provides a holistic view of the scope of COVID-19 exposure in their workforce, makes it easy to communicate directly with health workers and other critical staff, and helps organizations define steps for transitioning employees who have recovered from the virus back into the staff rotation. In the case of healthcare clients – this can help ensure those on the frontlines are able to safely help as many sick patients as possible.

The Pega COVID-19 Employee Safety and Business Continuity Tracker application is offered free of charge to our healthcare clients as well as clients in any industry.

The application allows organizations to:

  • Screen employees and assess risk based on self-reported responses to a series of questions.

  • Send tailored instructions to employees based on COVID-19 risk level.

  • Alert managers and Human Resources on assessed employees and generate checklists with specific actions for affected employees.

  • Estimate a likely return-to-work date for affected employees.

  • Keep employee data and staff availability current by sending employees periodic reminders to update COVID-19 health status.

  • Integrate with existing systems (e.g., HR, scheduling) to configure and perform additional functions, such as: identifying other potentially infected workers based on past meetings or office visits; continuity planning; and alerting other departments on additional access, scheduling, or communication actions that need to be taken.

Built using Pega’s low-code app development environment, the app is designed for intuitive use and easy configuration by IT professionals as well as citizen developers and includes: pre-built workflows; dashboards that allow organizations to visualize, monitor, and manage their workforce in real time; and to ability to customize to support the unique policies of any business.

Inspired by real need

The Pega COVID-19 Employee Safety and Business Continuity Tracker was inspired by a current client who, as one of the largest healthcare providers in the U.S., used Pega’s low-code platform to quickly create an app to track the availability and manage the scheduling of its staff – many of whom are on the front lines of the fight against COVID-19.

We are heartened that Pega software is supporting such an important purpose and are glad to share our technology with other organizations to help maintain workforce wellbeing and business continuity during these unprecedented times.
