“We’re a development partner. We’re a home for Pega knowledge, focused on the ROI and gaining value from the Pega platform to provide a standard of governance and code review.”
The Business Issue
Express Scripts is the largest pharmacy benefit manager in the U.S. with more than 30 years of experience focused on tackling tough healthcare issues. The organization strives to make prescription drugs safer and more affordable, servicing several million prescriptions every year through home delivery.
Express Scripts is powered by a Center of Excellence (COE), an internal ecosystem that drives 24 different applications across the company and supports around 240 developers across two countries. COE developers must work across and manage different corporate locations, strategies, applications, and frameworks. This promotes disparate and siloed processes.
The Solution
In order to streamline and unify the various components within the COE, Express Scripts implemented a common layer managed by the COE. This simplifies application management because the common layer is able to hold 13 applications, reusable components (such as authentication), several design patterns, and more.
In addition to the COE, Express Scripts leveraged Pega to build out its developer ecosystem through training programs, apprenticeships, and certification programs. The combined power of the COE and developer ecosystem enables Express Scripts to continuously provide the best healthcare service to each and every member. Because of the COE, the organization has saved millions of dollars annually on integration costs, feature development, new application builds, and more.
The Results
By teaming up with Pega, Express Scripts has seen great advances throughout the organization:
- COE savings range from $1.8M-$2.4M per year
- The common layer contains around 13 applications, 65+ rule sets, 200 integrations, and more.
- Ecosystem upgrades are quick and apply universally
- 85% of developers in training have successfully been certified
