We are currently living in a time of immense change and transformation. This can be both exhilarating and overwhelming, as we often feel a mix of exciting, confusing, terrifying, or all the above. A glance at the news on any given day will invoke these reactions to even the casual observer. With ongoing conflicts, rapid advancements in technology and artificial intelligence, and more frequent natural disasters, it can feel like the world is spinning out of control. In such times, it can be difficult for individuals to determine the best course of action and prioritize what's important in life. However, it's important to remember this cycle of turmoil and the search for meaning and purpose is not a new phenomenon but one that has persisted throughout history.
I mention this to set the stage for describing those who sign the dotted line to serve in the military despite the uncertainties of our world. Sure, individuals decide to join for a variety of reasons – comradery, training, and benefits – to name a few. I would argue, however, that a foundational reason for joining is to serve a higher cause – their country. In many places, individuals enlisting in the military or joining as officers must take an oath to their country before joining. Individuals solemnly promise to support and defend, bear true faith and allegiance, and obey orders. Once an individual takes the oath, their priority is clear.
Service members value discipline, high standards, teamwork, and being a part of something greater. Retired service members become veterans and continue to uphold these values in civilian life. They represent the best of what it means to serve selflessly and contribute to society in ways that set them apart.
The Veterans@Pega ERG was formed in 2020 to create and drive initiatives to enrich and expand the community of veteran employees at Pega. The ERG enables members and allies to provide mutual support, enhance career and personal development, and give back to the external veteran community.
November is designated as Veterans Awareness Month at Pega, which serves as an opportunity for us to reflect on the extraordinary journey of service members who have transitioned into veterans. It is a time to express our appreciation, support, and admiration for those who have dedicated themselves to protecting our freedoms. As we celebrate Veterans Awareness Month, honor their past sacrifices and recognize the ongoing value they bring as esteemed members of our communities and workforce.
During Veterans Awareness Month, reach out to a veteran colleague beyond the transactional "thank you" and engage in conversation. Learn about their service and experiences and how they apply them to working at Pega. Correspondingly, you may discover more about yourself and your priorities. To quote the ancient military strategist, Sun Tzu, "know yourself and you will win all battles."
